Just got out of seeing Force Awakens and I have a question...

This is hard to talk about with using spoilers but I'll try to be vague.

It just felt too convenient I guess. Everything was so interconnected and incestuous it just felt diminishing. The originals had the same problem I'm sure (honestly it's probably been ten years since I've seen them so maybe I'm remembering them too fondly), but I felt like they did a better job of conveying the grandeur and scale of the universe. In this movie the universe just feels small.

Also I didn't care for the quipping. Han and Leia had a lot of chemistry and there was some banter between the two, and Han also was kind of a prickly rogue who rubbed everyone the wrong way. But it just seemed over the top. I just didn't think they needed Finn to be the comic relief.

The smallest issue I had was probably Rey becoming a fully powered jedi in the space of two hours (though yah I realize she was one of Luke's pupils that got memwiped or whatever). I kind of liked seeing the character growth that Luke went through over three movies in the original saga. I feel like we got cheated out of that. Hell we didn't even get a Rocky montage. She was just like, oh yah I can do this shit. It makes sense the way it was done, I just didn't like it that much.

I don't feel any connection to the new characters really. I didn't hate them, but I don't think they got a chance to do much. As much as I loved the originals, I went in thinking Han, Luke and Leia would just have minor cameos. That they'd just be there to nod and hand over the reins. Instead they stole the show from. It's kind of weird, I have this originals loyalty where I feel like nobody is ever going to replace that original cast, but at the same time I don't want them around in the new movies either. It makes them look bad and it stunts the new characters.

But these are minor gripes. I think the movie is good. It didn't give me that emotional rush I got in the original movies, but it's not making me super mad and disgusted with myself like the prequels did. Mad Max reinvigorated my love of that universe and kind of stuck with me. This movie just gave me a feeling of "Yah that was good, I could watch another entry in a year or two I guess."
