Why, "Just be yourself" is a bunch of bullshit. (A video for your High School Mentees.)

"Just be yourself" is misunderstood. "Yourself" is who you were when you were three years old. You wanted what you wanted, you did not defer to the needs or wants of anyone else, you were not politically correct, you did not self-censor, you had no shame about who you were. You laughed when you were happy and cried when you were sad. You ran around the house naked and giggling after getting out of the bathtub. That was your natural self, your real self.

A certain amount of social conditioning is necessary. You can't just punch the kid beside you and take his cookies, or shiv the kid in front of you because you want their desk… those aren't the conditions to ensure the full realization of who you are. But a great amount of social conditioning that's applied is used to bury your real self. The greatest force in the universe if belief. To quote Henry Ford, "Believe that you can, or believe that you can't. Either way you're right." Social conditioning on this planet exists to bring that belief energy under the control of others. The goal is to chloroform you just enough to sap your energy out from you, enough to bring you under control and ensure obedience but leaving enough for you to provide for the very people holding the rag to your mouth.

Human beings are the physical epitome of evolution in the universe. You are literally capable of whatever you believe you're capable. Every belief that exists within you right now that says "I can't" flies in the face of that three year old you once were. Step one is to realize what you're capable of, for good or bad. Step two is to develop your own self-awareness so that you remember who you are. Step three is to believe in your self-awareness. Step four is to dream of what's next. Step five is to realize your dreams.

With utmost sincerity, I tell you to just be yourself. Your real self, not that homogenized, diluted, unfocused pablum that everyone else has tried to make you out to be. That is the lie. Yourself is the only truth there ever was.
