[K.C. Johnson] Bulls travel tips

Pau Gasol, the Bulls' elder statesman, is in his 15th NBA season. Fourteen full seasons features 574 road games, not counting playoffs or All-Star appearances.

That's a lot of plane rides, and doesn't even include his frequent international flights.

Now granted, boarding a private charter flight that is stocked with a food spread as fancy as your Aunt Edna's holiday best isn't as annoying as most travel. But road games still involve packing.

And while a pristine Tumi rollerboard clearing security and being placed on board — by someone else — isn't the equivalent of cramming the car full for the trip to Uncle Merv's, Thanksgiving does begin the holiday season.

So players shared their travel habits and some travel tips for both packing and passing the time on planes, gleaned from seasons of experience.

Or maybe not.

"I forgot my phone charger on this trip," Kirk Hinrich said.

So did Jimmy Butler.

Nevertheless, here are six Bulls to help you in time for this week's travel.

Derrick Rose, 8th NBA season

"The best packing tip is to make sure you pack your drawers and all your toiletry bag stuff first. Your drawers and toiletries are huge. Other than that, you can buy everything else you forget on the road. As long as you got a jogging suit, boxers and all your toiletries, you're fine. I've mastered it. I can pack in 20 minutes. I overpack but I can get it all done in 20 minutes.

But sometimes I talk to Jo (Noah) for hours. Flights are cool. Travel can get boring if you don't have an up-to-date playlist or good movies. But the majority of the time, it's pretty easy."

Butler, 5th NBA season

"On a long trip, we're normally on the West Coast so I got to bring my swimming trunks and my slippers. Nah, I just bring a lot of clothes. I'm fashionable, baby, unlike some guys. (laughs) A lot of different clothes. A lot of different Jordans. I pack sometimes. Sometimes my brothers pack for me. It isn't too hard. Just bring a couple suits, some matching Jordans to go with pants and a button-up. I try to look nice.

Hinrich, 13th NBA season

"I'm getting worse at it. I'm too busy keeping track of bottles and lunch boxes. (Hinrich and his wife have four children.) Really, I just count the number of games, make sure I have the outfits that fit the NBA dress code. Then I count the days off and pack some sweats for those. Throw in a pair of jeans, a couple shirts and I'm good to go.

"On the plane, I'm mostly on my iPad. Listen to music. Play games — Tiger Woods golf, FIFA soccer. Maybe watch some movies. I used to play cards but it got too crazy for me. Poker was my game. Now they play bourre.

Gasol, 15th NBA season

"I just try to keep it simple. It depends on the length of the trip, obviously. But you never want to pack anything extravagant or unnecessary. I'm quick and tidy, especially because I like to wear suits.

"On the plane, I like to read. I play cards. That makes the flights go a little bit faster. It also creates a little bonding between the guys, which I think is important."

Taj Gibson, 7th NBA season

"My best tip? Lots of boxers. Lots and lots of boxers. It doesn't matter about anything else. As long as you got boxers and toothpaste and other bathroom essentials, you'll be fine. You can always shop for the other stuff. I just pack a lot of sweat suits. We can get the rest from Ligs (longtime equipment manager John Ligmanowski). If you need socks, Ligs is your guy.

"I'm a terrible flyer. Everybody is always calming me down. I try to kick back and watch the guys play poker and talk trash. I try to be a bully on the play, loosen up, have fun. I watch some movies but I mostly like to converse, mess around with the rookies and Joakim. I barely sleep on the plane because I'm such a bad flyer, so I mostly just like to mess with people."

Doug McDermott, 2nd NBA season

"I'm a huge overpacker. I brought four sweat suits for this trip and I've worn the same one every day. I gotta chill on that. I get paranoid so I always bring too much. I have to learn that I definitely don't need to do that.

Bulls' Doug McDermott Photos of the 2014 draft pick from Creighton. "On planes, I'm more of a movie guy. I was a card guy for a solid two games and lost a lot of money and hung it up."
