That's why you look at the cap hit, because the cap hit specifically looks at the signing bonus that is spread throughout the contract. It's a way to look at what he's getting paid today while specifically taking into account what he got paid up front.

BUT, if you want to look at what he got paid up front, he's got the same or worse signing bonus as 3 of those I mentioned, the exception is Eric Berry, who has about $18m more in guaranteed money than Chancellor, which is basically his signing bonus, just spread out.

Let's look at that: He was paid more than Berry, but then that was 2 years before he signed a contract and again Berry had more money guaranteed until this season even though he's been signed since 2010 and is in the last year of his contract (and still has money guaranteed). He was paid more than Jones, except Jones, who signed his contract for the same total amount in the same year, again was guaranteed more (almost double). Then there's Whitner, signed last year, shorter contract, bigger signing bonus and again WAY more guaranteed. Finally, TJ Ward, this one you actually have a point, not regarding the up front money, that's still wrong, but because he gets an absurd roster bonus this season for $2.5m that made him higher for this season.

3 of the 4 players I named have a better ENTIRE CONTRACT in almost every way, than Kam Chancellor. Don't get me wrong, I think he's in the wrong here, but it's not because he's still the highest or second highest, but because the team isn't in a situation to give him what he wants, and he's in the last guaranteed year of his contract and he'd have more leverage next year when they couldn't just take him to court for not playing.
