Laverne Cox - Sweet Transvestite [musical]

Laverne Cox, a Mobile, Alabama native, started her serious dance training in high school at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham. She moved to New York City to study dance at Marymount Manhattan College where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance. There Laverne also became interested in acting, music and gender theory. All of which she began to study in depth. At Marymount Laverne was hand picked by the legendary composer Charles Strouse (Annie) for his musical revue “Can’t Stop Dancin!” Laverne continued her acting training at Black Nexxus Studios with world renowned acting coach Susan Batson where during her studies she was called on by Ms. Batson to teach.

Laverne’s passion for acting and performing recently landed her a guest starring role on “Law and Order: SVU”. She was recently featured on an MTV news special with colleague Britney Houston and will soon be featured in a campaign for the Swiss skin care line “I am”. She has also acted in various independent films including the awarding winning “The Kings of Brooklyn” and “Daughter of Arabia.” She has also appeared at performance venues all over New York City including Radio City Music Hall, P.S. 122, Dixon Place, La Mama Etc., Galapagos, The Dupledx and The Producer’s Club.

She has also been a rotating host of the local monthly cable show “Out at the Center” since 2006. Other community oriented work Laverne is proud to have been involved with is the groundbreaking educational video “Transgender Basics”, a production of the New York City LGBT community center. Laverne also was featured in the first ever round table discussion for “The Advocate” magazine about the relationship between gay and transgender in the LGBT community.
