Layla Moran says Labour's Keir Starmer should be worried if she becomes leader of the Liberal Democrats

The only parties that can do centrism and succeed in the U.K. are Labour and the Conservatives.

Centrism for third parties without a wedge issue and another political system to build themselves up in is a dead end.

The reality of our political system is we have two blocks and people perceive parties as belonging to one block or the other:

  • “Right” : Conservative, Brexit Party, UKIP et cetera

  • “Left” : Labour, Liberal Democrats, Green Party, SNP, Plaid Cymru et cetera

The Conservatives and their leader are seen as the leaders of the right wing block.

Labour and their leader are seen as the leaders of the left wing block.

Brexit was coded right wing and Remain left wing.

That’s why Labour has been such a negative force for left wing politics since 2015.

Corbyn was so far from the centre that anyone not strongly aligned with the left found it impossible to support Labour/Left Wing politics during his time as leader.

Then they also tried to support Brexit or be all neutral on it which also turned off even more non-aligned or soft-left parties.

But I’ve wandered away from the core point here. There is no successful route to victory by being ‘centrist’ for a non-lead party. We need to code ourselves clearly as either right-wing or left-wing (and it’s obviously left wing because liberalism and democracy are left wing philosophies).

That doesn’t mean we need to become socialists or start spitting in the faces of non-aligned or right-wingers. What it means is we need to:

  • promote our own left wing politics

  • be willing to co-operate with left-wing parties to a certain extent

  • hope Labour take a centrist enough position that non-aligned voters aren’t afraid to vote for left-block parties
