I want to learn how to think strategically

You're thinking about it incorrectly. It isn't reading your opponent's moves for the next 5 plays, it's creating a plan for the most probably possibilities. Let's say I'm playing chess. There's no way in hell I can tell you want my opponent will do in the next 3 turns - but I can picture 3-4 possible plays. You need to ensure that your play can counter those likely outcomes.

To think strategically, you don't figure out your opponents exact plan, or even the most likely plan - you just reason through the possibilities which all are likely to occur.

A horrible example of a person - but Hitler was said to have created hundreds of plans for many many different possibilities.
