Man accused of slitting 16-year-old's throat, leaving her in garage after responding to a "Backpage" ad

I have no idea why I am engaging at this point, but for what it is worth, I think punitive measures like jail and the trappings that come with it (e.g. rampant abuse, solitary confinement) are not terribly helpful.

No one is saying that all individuals with personality disorders should be required to participate in mandated mental health services.

My premise is simple:

If someone commits a violent crime they should be assessed and given mandated therapy support that extends beyond their treatment. Ideally this would be more compassionate support than throwing someone in jail; and more comprehensive than a brief visit with a social worker before entering jail. How many people get some quick diagnosis, do their time, and get released with no support from the criminal system?

If someone who commits a violent crime also pops for a personality disorder, they probably need extended therapy and ongoing checkups and support.

You seem to be projecting all sorts of meaning onto "mandated monitoring." You file taxes, you have requirements to drive a car, you have medical obligations if you want to work or go to school. Those are all examples of "mandated monitoring" that are intended to be protective and supportive (...well...maybe not taxes) rather than punitive.

And to get really reductionist, my original comment was more of a "what if" instead of a "well this is how things should be."

But here's the reality. Going to jail is currently traumatic and likely not helpful in terms of reforming people. Most people with mental health problems are not violent criminals...they end up with some drug problem or homeless or in some shitty apartment. And they have a poor quality of life and are at high risk for death due to health problems.

Why wouldn't you support more support? Even of the mandated variety? Like, I'm trying to approach this thread in good faith and engage without the ad hominem and referencing of posting history. But at a certain point I need to throw in the towel and call a spade a spade...
