A man I met online [45] wants to fly me [19/F] out to NYC to meet him. Should I do it?

Looks like you've made the decision not to go, which I agree with. I've met two of my online friends, one of whom I literally flew across the world to meet, and it went fantastic. But it took a hell of a lot more than 5 months of chat to earn that trust.

  • We had been online friends for over 7 years, during which we developed a close emotional bond.

  • We had hundreds of video calls.

  • We each other's introduced friends/family during some of these calls. My family and my friend's family all got together in one Skype video call prior to my big trip.

  • Our first meeting was at the airport, where we were surrounded by security.

The point I'm getting at is this: If you're putting yourself in such a vulnerable position, that person needs the kind of trust that he isn't going to earn in just a few months of texting. The fact you're even asking this shows he hasn't earned that yet.

Don't do it. Worst case scenario, you split with a guy you'll never meet, who you've only known a few months. Best case scenario, you don't end up the subject of a public service announcement.
