This may not be as sophisticated as most but I found making myself a wish list helps me save money.

It's simple, but effective. Figured since this topic came up, I can go ahead and share this for anyone wanting to get on the wishlist track.

This is the same template for a wishlist I made for myself on excel. Each pair of columns has you enter the name of the thing you want to add, and then the cost of that thing in the other. It sums it up by category and sums a grand total for you in the end. If you want to add more categories, you just use each two columns and copy the pattern already put in place.

If you want, you can put conditional formatting on each category to break it down by range or set an amount you deem "too high" if you so wish.

You can delete or move around categories if you want to make the first category "want it now" items or something. You can also color in individual cells of the items to indicate "requires installation" or whatever you'd like. Create a legend in the bottom left if you want to keep track of each cell color's meaning.

Finally, I also included a simple monthly budget in the same document. You can use that to enter in things and see how long it'll take you to complete your wishlist (while being able to regularly update it) if you devote a certain amount of your monthly budget to it. Additionally, you can enter a custom number of months along with a value for a good time projection. You can also set a specific deadline (ex. 24 months) and see how much money you'd have to allocate toward your wishlist on a monthly basis to meet that demand. This is all basic excel, but I figure it's still of use to someone.

Makes it really handy when things really start to sit in the list for a while and you eventually decide it's not really what you want and you cut it out.
