My eye doctor in Texas (top) charged $250 for the visit plus $$ for lab exams, cared more about verifying my insurance, 4 hour wait, overbooked, saw the Dr for 5 mins. My eye Dr in Mexico (bottom) 10 min wait, cured my uveitis in 5 days, and gave me his Whatsapp. $60 total including meds.

Socialized medicine (bottom, Mexico) is far more effective

As a US healthcare professional with a very complex medical history who lives in Mexico, it is so maddening to me to read comments like yours–to say nothing of most of the comments here– and see how little people understand about healthcare. Both in the US and basically any other country.

For starters: This is not socialized medicine, it's a private clinic that is likely cash-only. It might accept commercial insurance, but it is absolutely not a government facility does not have any of the typical signage that the government facilities do. Where I am in Mexico City, a doctor visit runs anywhere from $40 to $80 USD, which is as much as 10% of an entire household monthly income. For one doctor visit.

Mexico's government-funded healthcare, which everyone can access (Seguro Popular) is notoriously poor, with extreme delays in access to care. The IMSS is another system that is government-funded, but it's only for employed people, you cannot access it. Not to mention that the IMSS has a laundry list of conditions that it won't cover- addiction, mental health problems, cancer, connective tissue disease, etc. Living the dream!

So before people star gushing about how sexy "socialized medicine" is in a place like Mexico, you'd better think twice. Because with everything in Mexico, if you have money, you get top-of-the-line private healthcare. If you don't, good luck. Sound familiar?
