My hometown telling students not to protest but be silent

I grew up in the conservative South and trust, any show of independent thought or individuality was usually considered very disruptive and suspect. It was basically understood that as a kid, you didn’t have many rights. Unless your parent were rich that is. Things have changed tremendously since I was a kid in the 90s, but it wasn’t that long ago that the rinky dink politicians of the town I grew up in worked very, very hard to keep the town from even having internet access. The only reason they relented and allowed a company to offer dialup (!) is because many people complained and threatened to go outside the town.

Schools here obviously do teach history and touch on protests and stuff but it’s more of “that was the olden days, things are fine now so shut up.”
