We need to fix social media. Could verifying real life identities be a start?

I think you're definitely right about the need for verification. Although I have a wider question: Why do ppl need to air their opinions on politics, religion etc in public? What's the compulsion to share so much. Most ppl realize in their private lives that amongst friends and family we avoid certain topics so as not to cause bad feelings. Why is that out the window online? I think if verification isn't possible then civility rules should be in place. We would never say half the horrific things to someone's face that we will anonymously online. If we value good behavior in person and for our kids, shouldn't we behave that way online? And if we can't behave, get banned on that platform. Be anonymous if you must but above all, be nice! Like this sub...civil discourse on tough topics.
