Hi, I'm not sure how many responses you've gotten to this post about copyright infringement. A few questions - where in New York are you located? Have you (or more specifically) your mom, received any actual court summons? This would be a specific piece of paper that starts lawsuit called a "summons" - a letter isn't enough. To sue someone there must be specific papers delivered. You'd want to find out l what the alleged copyright is too - what are they claiming you downloaded? (I don't necessarily care, but you're going to want to know.)

If what you are saying is 100% accurate (it sounds like maybe you left some stuff out), you may have a real lawsuit on your hands and you'll need a lawyer. That lawyer could advise whether to settle or not etc, of course final decision is not the lawyer's but the clients. There lawyers that do pro bono lawyers (meaning they'd do it for free) in some cases. You can find these lawyers through local bar associations, but it also depends what's involved.
