Official Discussion Thread - RWBY Vol3: Chapter 9 - PVP

Okay, let's get less emotional this time. I'll try to summarize my concerns about what we've seen in the new episode. It's not even that I don't like the episode, it reveals Cinder's plan, it makes me worried about the characters and wonder how are they're going to resolve this crap (or at least save themselves), so I'm still looking forward to the next episodes. But the thing with Penny really made me worried about the future of the show. Everybody kinda expected things to go horrible for her, but, I don't think it was needed to make it THAT horrible.

  • First of all, Penny is actually a human – she's characterized as a human, acts like a human and everybody treats her like human. So seeing her ripped in half like that is just as terrifying - we see a cheerful and nice character turning into a disfigured pile of junk. The only difference is that she has an artificial body that could probably be rebuilt.

  • Second, they didn't even HAVE to destroy her like that for the plot. Basically this all makes me think that they all did this only to say “LOOK HOW DARK WE ARE NOW!” And that makes me unhappy.

  • Third, I just imagine now how Penny fans feel... To be honest, I don't like her character very much, but I don't hate her, and in the end it doesn't actually matter. If they did that to my favorite girl, I don't even know what would I say... And there's no reason to think that they won't do that to anybody else now.

I've been told that show is going to be family-friendly and because of that I had some expectations about the show. They even talked about V2E1 on some RTX or livestream that they originally planed to add blood splattered across the windows of the shop, but then they decided that they don't want that in the show. I get the viewer discretion message, but I didn't expect them to drop the whole family-friendly thing...

And so far fights weren't fatal or permanently crippling for the main characters, and I was okay with that! That what I wanted and expected to see in the future. We even has built-in “plot armor” called “Aura” which justifies why these girls fight wearing fancy dresses and not armor. But now, they decided to do a complete 180 by ripping a character in half on-screen. Who's going to be next? Pyrrha? Qrow? Weiss? How am I supposed to look forward to the fights of my favorite character now? Should I even watch the show further? And no, a certain person who I recently argued with, there's a difference between an injury and outright dismemberment.

The thing is, I had hopes for this season like everybody had. I wanted to see some badass moments for my favorite characters, cool fights and stuff like that. While we got some fights and heartwarming scenes with RWY, Winter and Qrow, but since episode 5 my favorite character lost a fight again, villains continue to succeed in everything they do, and honestly the entire team RWBY is looking useless currently. On top of that one character got destroyed in a gruesome manner...
