Oh man...music video tomorrow at 7 A.M. EST! And I’m going to be chatting/answering your questions/mansplaining the video on YouTube starting an hour before at 6 A.M. EST - Taylor on Instagram

I don't think she's using that term at all men, but I do think the term has become too much of a catch-all. Playing devil's advocate here.

Of course nobody likes to be treated like an idiot or be lectured at. Many women have undoubtably had a man explain things to them with unnecessary detail. Hell, I daresay Taylor has been at the receiving end. Some men do have that problem and they take it into the workplace or government. But, I argue that mansplaining is the way most men talk.

Men don't just mansplain to women. They also mansplain to other men. Men simply like to explain things. Men are bursting with ideas and anecdotes they are excited to share with someone, including occasionally a woman.

I'm sure many of you have been in a conversation with (for example) your father or uncle or a male neighbour, then something piques their interest and next thing you know they are delivering a lengthy spiel. Can it be annoying? Absolutely. But in most cases, they don't mean harm or were trying to intimidate or put you down.

There are misogynists out there who absolutely deserve to be called out. It is also worth remembering that being angry is easy. Directing that anger at someone is easy. But don't direct that anger at the wrong target.

I was inspired by this opinion piece by the English journalist Victoria Coren Mitchell.
