People don't know as much about vampires as they think they do

I’m not saying anything is more correct than anything else. The problem is people are literally getting their facts wrong: they’re claiming the silver mirror thing is an original part of the folklore from centuries past even though it’s just a modern pop culture invention. It’s misinformation plain and simple.

By characterizing the silver mirror thing as a traditional part of the folklore they’re giving it an air of authenticity and suggesting it’s something every author should consider in a vampire story. But it’s not. It’s like telling someone they don’t know how magic works because they didn’t follow the same rules as Harry Potter.
