People who had to tell their families about their mental health problems, what happened?

I didn't tell my parents, went to see a psychiatrist without telling them. I have a sibling with depression and anxiety too, he got diagnosed in NS. My parents found out through a doctor's memo. The way my parents talked about his depression when he isn't around makes me sad. They are not supportive and do not understand what depression is. I don't blame them maybe because they aren't educated.

Boomer parents don't understand mental health, think that depression is laziness, strawberry generation. When there are news of people dying of suicide, they would say things like "parents spent so much money to raise him, never think about the parents", doesn't believe that depression is real, think that psychiatrists are influenced by pharmaceutical companies to prescribe antidepressants. It's hard when you have parents who don't communicate and aren't supportive. I have my friends, psychiatrists and counsellors to rely on. It's important to have a strong support system.
