People who noped right out of a friendship, what was your breaking point with that friend?

Started working in a small team of software developers. All remote, spread round the country, working from home. After meeting up for work stuff one of the guys started buddying up to me. Suggested he spend the weekend at my place (sure why not), one weekend literally just turned up without an invite but seemed a pretty nice guy. Then dropped hints about leaving his home city and moving in to my spare room (which I ignored). A month later moved from his city to mine. He seemed a nice guy and I welcomed him and helped him move in. He was a confident guy, respected at work but looking back he didn't seem to have many friends (but was popular at work).

I had a busy social life and good group of friends but I was happy to have someone new to hang out with. I'd meet up for drinks with him. We were both single and we'd go out and chase women. Over time he grew more confident around me and just became more and more of a douche. He just didn't get my sense of humour so he'd take obvious jokes seriously and he kept making me the butt of his jokes, putting me down and one upping me. I remember one time we were out for a pleasant drink and I started talking about how awesome this new girl I was dating was. He just flat out said, not joking, completely seriously "...but why is she interested in you?".

After about a year I just thought this is ridiculous. I don't like this guy. He keeps being a jerk to me. I've got plenty of great friends who I enjoy spending time with and who like and respect me. So I just took a step back and said I was busy whenever he suggested we hang out but treated him professionally at work.

He ended up causing problems for me at work - spreading nasty rumours, turning people against me. At one point he phoned me up for a work conversation and at the end of it he told me he was getting counselling for "not being nice to his friends." I just went "oh ok, good". The whole thing was bizarre from start to finish.
