I was a junior in college then.

My first class of the day on Tuesdays was at 11am, and it was pretty much the last class before the university just shut down altogether for the day. Nobody was paying any attention. The professor was also pretty shaken up about it, and pretty much phoning it in with respect to his lecture.

I had one of those Sprint phones that could surf the web at like 25 cents a minute. I normally dared not use it lest it cost a fortune, but I spent most of that class period reading the news on a 5-line screen trying to figure out wtf was going on. At that point in the morning there were still all kinds of unconfirmed reports floating around -- things like a plane having hit at Camp David, or United 93 having been shot down.
