Yeah, that was like a year maybe after the war in Iraq started, and things were definitely dependent on the situation.

But later in the war most units go at least a year in between deployments, if for no other reason than to train the new guys and for people to see their loved ones. Some units deploy more than others too.

I was Army infantry, and so was the guy I’m talking about, but I have a few buddies that were marines. One of them told me they were doing 6 month deployments, and something about time on a ship or something like that, while we were stationed together in Afghanistan.

Not entirely sure how it works with marines. Army typically does 12 month deployments though, sometimes extended to 15 or 18 months, depending on needs of the Army. Mission always comes first. Sometimes there’s no choice, especially in times of surge or what have you.
