Police Officers of Reddit: Was the Texas Police Officer justified in his actions from the now infamous "Pool Party video"?

I have friends who are currently in civilian law enforcement.

The way the officer handled this situation was appalling. What we also have to consider is that policing methods vary from city to city, community to community across the nation. Economic circumstances unfortunately do play a role also, because economic qualities play important roles in producing productive individuals who, in turn, create a healthy, vibrant community life.

I have personally participated in "ride along" with police officers. I have to tell you from personal experience..most people are assholes. The level of belligerence and aggression is incredible in communities, and in my experience participating with these officers on patrol they get out of the car with the intention of being more pleasant than firm and to only give a warning. Only to face an onslaught of insults. Not a police officer, but a human being in a uniform only has so much patience. At the same time..officers can be assholes too. I have approached officers in different cities to ask a question or directions only to be blown off or they treat me like I'm disturbing them.

What do they do? Take your points and max out the fine on that ticket you probably could have avoided. Officers are facing these days more than ever a much more informed belligerent populace under a lot of stress. Police departments are also facing disintegrating camaraderie within the department.

What was wrong: Absolutely no teamwork among officers and a total disregard of rules of engagement. Any decent police officer(s) could have contained that situation without much intimidation. It appeared to be a pool party run amok, officers should have located the owner of the home approach the neighbors and tell everyone the party is over please leave the premises. Neighbors should be present during this situation acting as a sort of guarantor if things do escalate, isn't this their neighborhood?Did the officers properly look at the situation properly before going in? Doubtful.

The community model between cities and police departments needs to be rebuilt, especially in distressed neighborhoods.

.

What was right: Nothing was right. This is simply the byproduct of the disintegration of trust between law and local communities.

There needs to be more analysis and critical review and a much more academic approach during police academy and training during an office's career regarding "rules of engagement. Along with this, weaving emerging technology (social media) and a demographic who perceive things much more differently in today's world.

Civilians, themselves also need to familiarize themselves with their constitutional rights.
