Polygon: The Hidden Cost of Playing as a Woman, as Explained By a Twelve-Year Old

Went to the actual site so I won't link it but the top comments are great. Moderator gets firmly shut down when trying to claim MEN WOULD BE FURIOUS IF YOU COULD ONLY PLAY AS A WOMAN

Foggen This episode is fucking terrible. She "takes on the entire video game industry" by looking at a very specific sub-category of free-to-play games and calling out a specific nuance of free-to-play bullshit. Look, if you want to complain about paucity of female representation, that’s fine. I’ll watch your Tropes vs Women videos and we can have a conversation. But please, for fucks sake, don’t act like Temple Run and Temple Run clones are All Video Games, under any context. Apr 10, 2015 | 11:18 AM REPLY

Kirielson Kirielson SECRET MODERATOR, POLYGON Sounds like you have the representation that you need.

To be blunt, it is BS that you have to pay more to be a female avatar. Literally if the roles were reversed we would have a collation of men doing everything they can to destroy the developer. Apr 10, 2015 | 11:20 AM REPLY

Foggen Foggen Yeah, I got really upset when Tomb Raider came out and I couldn’t play as a guy. Apr 10, 2015 | 11:27 AM REPLY

Kirielson Kirielson SECRET MODERATOR, POLYGON Tomb Raider does not allow you to select the protagonist, Temple Run does. Apr 10, 2015 | 11:31 AM REPLY

Long_Live_Providence Long_Live_Providence You just cemented his point. See, Temple Run at least gives you the option to play as a woman, and Tomb Raider doesn’t. So according to your claim that "if the roles were reversed we would have a coalition of men doing everything they can to destroy the developer", not only are we forced to play as a female protagonist, but we don’t even have a CHOICE to play as a male. Whoa, that almost sounds worse! Now I bet you’d say "Hey Cable, that’s not the point. The point is that it IS an option, but you have to pay for it, whereas the male character is default!"

So lets say that Ubisoft releases a DLC that lets you play as Conrad Roth, but you have to pay $9.99 to play as him. OH THE INJUSTICE. THE REPUBLIC IS BURNING. Can you really picture a large population of males getting upset over that. Come on. Stop this role-reversal nonsense…
