Portland, you are better than that. We've upgraded to bombs.

I was in a cab getting a ride from a doctor's appointment back to my home and we had also stopped to get another patient, an elderly woman with a walker. I was talking to the elderly woman (how are you, how about the weather, that sort of thing) until we arrived at her retirement home. She started to get out of the car and the taxi driver went to retrieve her walker.

I continued conversing with her through the open window of the car (we were talking about the sudden blustery wind that had started that day) and the driver of our taxi (who was obviously stressed out) came in at the wrong point of the conversation. She snapped at the old woman in that here's-some-passive-aggressive-customer-service-condescension way that you recognize if you've ever been employed in the service industry. She admonished the woman for complaining, hurried her along, and got back in the cab.

Then she let forth with a verbal tirade about Californians, replete with expletives and gesticulation. She complained about Californians coming to take her job and her home (when she said this she gestured to the obvious retiree still trundling slowly towards the retirement home). She let out a few expletives and suggested I seem like a nice guy (or something, I kind of zoned out of the conversation).

At any rate, I've been living in Bend for a few years now and this is why I don't tell people I'm from California.
