Puck out of bounds question off faceoff

Yeah, you got it. Maybe a better way of putting it would be if it said it goes immediately out of play as a result of the faceoff being conducted or something.

But yeah, all this means is that if the puck is dropped, and player on team A wins the draw cleanly and the puck leaves the playing surface as a direct result of that win, the faceoff is reheld as if nothing happened. That would also be the case if player on team A (or B) wins it and it ticks immediately off another player on either team. Best way to think of it is, puck gets dropped, and is immediately put out right after it touches the ice and the two faceoff opponents square off and contact it. If it's won to anyone and they subsequently put it out, that's different, even if it happens right away. It just means drop, right out a split second after the drop.

The only wrinkle you might find in this is a linesman's discretion in terms of game management. I was watching a game between Philly and Detroit early this season. The puck was dropped at center ice, and Sheahan of Detroit won it back to his defenseman, DeKeyser, who gathered it in just ahead of his own defending blue line. He wound up and shot the puck, which proceeded to travel just past the Flyers' defending blue line before going over the side glass and out of play.

Technically, the next faceoff should have probably gone to the neutral zone spot outside the Wings blue line (the team responsible for the stoppage is supposed to get territorial disadvantage), moving the Wings back territorially since DeKeyser was standing just next to his own blue line as he fired it. However, they just held it again at center, presumably since it happened literally 2 seconds after a faceoff was won and the flyers really didn't do anything to deserve the bump in territory. If the same thing happened in the offensive zone (the defending zone of Philly), and DeKeyser shot it directly out, the faceoff would move to neutral ice. Here, though, I believe the linesman exercised his judgement since the faceoff was held at center and just decided to drop it again. Officials have some latitude in these situations. Don't ask me how I remember that. I guess it caught my attention since I pay close attention to stuff like that. Nerd alert.
