Questions about J1 visa

You won't be able to stay permanently on a J1 visa. And I'd highly recommend to not mention you want to relocate permanently at any J1 interviews/embassy/consulate interviews! you need to provide evidence or a good reason that you will be inclined to return to your home country after your visa ends.

I am currently on the J1 visa in the US (I'm Australian) and I would really want to advise you to make sure you do your research on the company you'd end up going with or being hired by as I have met so many people who have been completely taken advantage of. With my visa it was initially for 12 months plus a 13th month free to travel the US but I extended a further 12 months (that is the most you can extend with a J1) but during my stay I have become engaged and we will be getting married a week before my visa ends.

So for me the J1 process has been a nice excellent experience and I wasn lucky enough to have a great employer but you really have to do your homework and not just jump in because you want to get there as quick as possible. It is a lengthy process to make sure all the paper work is correct, interviews, health checks etc etc but IMO is worth it!
