A philosopher's position is always driven by their psychology. The more one clings to ideas like society, culture, and history the more they will beleive in materialism as they don't want to admit everything is an illusion. On the other hand someone who thinks too highly of themselves will perhaps cling to idealism as they want to believe they are special.

While I am not religious I like the bible quote about the rich man not being able to go to heaven- meaning that the more invested one is with the world around themselves the less likely they will be able to uncover any truth as they won't accept it may possibly be an illusion. This is something I am currently struggling with.
