The real reason most men are hesitant to show emotion or appear 'feminine', is because they want to attractive to (straight) women.

I totally agree. The problem is our society is way too sexual people are so eager to show how inclusive they are that they keep looking for queerness where it isn't just to show how inclusive and cool they are...but the flip side of this is...it actually makes straight men act out even more toxic masculinity so as to differentiate themseves to remain attractive to straight women.

For example. In the 80s there used to be buddy cop movies, and the characters expressed their opinions, emotions fought bad guys together and nobody ever interpretted it as gay. The buddy cops were simply good friends who worked well together and when the working day was done, went home to their respective wives.

Contrast that with today, in a Pixar movie "Luca" about teenagers we have 3 main characters : Luca, Julia and Alberto having adventures. And despite the authors clearly stated "non-sexual" nature of the friendship between the main cast ...we still had a whole internet uproar of people insisting that it was pixars first gay film....simply because the main cast were close friends.

Now...when young straight men see this reaction...all its gonna do is make them behave less emotional.

In other words...one of the main things that makes straight men behave with toxic masculinity....is how quickly people queer bait any show of emotion.

Because...like the OP said, a single heterosexual man doesn't want to be mistaken for gay by the heterosexual women he encounters....which is only natural.

If people weren't so busy trying to prove whether someone is gay or not...then straight men would feel more free to act less stoic.
