Really nervous about doing online schooling. Care to share your success stories?

Success stories? I don't know, I kind of see mine as one.

I came from a poor family so the moment I graduated high school I was headed to the local JC to take classes while I saved up to transfer to a 4 year school to finish my degree. That never happened. I met the love of my life who would go on to be my wife and mother of my child. She came from an even poorer family. Unfortunate circumstances hit that forced us to choose who finished their degree, she or I. We chose for her to finish as I had the better paying job. She finished her degree and I was well in to a career in IT that prevented me from attending as I was working 60-80 hrs/week.

After a decade or so I was let go from my company and I found myself with a boatload of experience but no degree or certifications. I found myself losing out on jobs to people with bachelors and masters degrees and certifications. Going to school at nights or during the day just wasn't possible and at the time the only online schools I was aware of were scams (UoP, Corinthians, etc). The day of my birthday a few years back I came across people raving about how great WGU was on another forum. I looked in to WGU and it looked great. I was skeptical like you but made an appointment with an enrollment counselor. He touted the school being regionally accredited, non-profit, and affordable. I was sold on it and I'm glad I believed what people were saying. The school is great and you really get out of it what you put in to it. I completed my degree 4-5 months ago and have a whole host of certifications (far beyond what the degree had me earn). I'm so excited about what opportunities exist now for schools that I will be returning for an MBA in IT Management at WGU next year.

The big thing for me was the school being 1) Regionally accredited like all the other big named schools, just without their long pedigree, 2) Non-profit like all the other big schools (University of Phoenix and most other online schools are FOR-profit), and 3) AFFORDABLE. That was huge for me as I did not have much money to spend. I completed my degree in one year at the cost of $6k, a legitimate degree from a great school. There are also other people here who have gone the same path as you and have been hired as full time teachers in solid school districts.
