Reddit, when did you dodge a bullet?

Former EMT here. We got called to a house in the middle of no where for someone complaining of trouble breathing. We had to go down a long driveway to get to the house and the fire department was already there when we arrived. The told us that no one had answered the door and dispatch couldn't get the caller to answer the phone. We received permission to break into the house due to the nature of the call.

I was starting to walk back to my truck to grab some supplies when someone started shooting at us. I don't so much remember running. It happened so fast that one second I recognized the sound of gun shots and the next I was hiding on the other side of my truck. There was absolutely no way for us to get out without exposing ourselves to the shooter. It took seven of the longest minutes of my life for the police to arrive and get us out of there.

Thankfully, no one was hurt including the shooter. It turns out that she had some pretty severe mental problems and her family was struggling to get her treatment. Her poor husband showed up after they got us to safety and was so upset. He wouldn't stop apologizing to us for her behavior. I don't think I've ever felt so sorry for anyone in my life. Fortunately for her and her family, the judge recognized that she needed help and made sure that she got it instead of throwing her in jail. So, while we may have dodged literal bullets that day, that patient was so lucky to get a judge who understood what she needed. This was several years ago and I don't know where she is now, but I truly hope that she and her family were able to heal.
