Redditors who grew up in a low income/poor family but eventually made it to middle/upper class as an adult, what are some things that helped you bridge that gap? Also, what surprised you the most about your current lifestyle compared to when you grew up?

Grew up in a broken family with an abusive father. Bullied young, confidence issues among others. Smart kid that didn’t apply himself. Went to state school and started with a 1.5 GPA. Broke ties with violent father and struck out on my own at 20 with nothing. Paid tuition with loans and shitty job. Declared Finance major. Busted my ass and by senior year was pulling a 3.8. Started at the bottom of corporate America with a contract accounts payable job and kept busting my ass (sometimes 85 hour weeks, working through serious personal loss and nervous breakdowns etc), taking strong calculated risks until one day I looked up and now I have a successful career in commodities trading, taking a cut of what I earn with house money. If I fuck it up I make nothing. But thankfully it’s gone well, this has been a breakout year, and I will earn somewhere north of $700k commission. It’s hard to reconcile. We live in an 1100 sq ft house and my wife drives an old 4Runner. Just going to keep investing and earning until work becomes an option. Hustle hard, always find angles, don’t fucking sit still unless you’re satisfied with what you’ve achieved so far. Which you shouldn’t be. Playing video games? Watching sports? Laying in bed? Someone out there is sharpening their skills and getting ahead while you waste your precious time. It’s out there if you want it, you just have to work fucking hard to get it.
