My chapter is about 25% Juniors (under the age of 35) and 75% older - which is actually a pretty good distribution of ages. They do tend to skew older but there are plenty of younger women.

The short version is is that every chapter is different in terms of personality but there's a set expectation in terms of what needs to be covered at meetings and how. Our chapter is pretty relaxed (no need to dress up at meetings or anything like that and the meeting times are pretty good for working women) but I do know there are others out there that skew older and do more "homemaker" things and meet during working hours during the week.

The biggest thing I can say is that you can shop around and visit chapters in the area to see which one may be a good fit. You have to have a patriot that either served or helped during the Revolution - this is actually pretty lax. You just need to prove they helped with something - donate money, served, was a woman who did something (they love that) or even slaves who served. Anything really.
