I felt pretty safe at our apartment until a recent shooting meant us having to step over a body bag on the way to work. We’ve also had numerous packages stolen, not just from the mail room, but from our own unit’s door, floors up in the building, by people that don’t live here and didn’t enter or exit a single unit. Now we’ve gone full paranoia mode and so has the landlord. No more code access, key-fob only, cameras everywhere (ours and theirs).

The cause? Like everywhere else downtown, there’s a newly-opened fancy restaurant on the ground floor, this one’s owner has been on TV a bunch recently. Can’t speak to the food cause we don’t eat meat but yeah, the hype is annoying to live above for sure. And now all signs point to the increased crime rate involving the restaurant’s staff, whom leave the buildings back door propped open all the time, have friends visit them on break and then cut through the building rather than walk around, and are just generally sketchy assholes.

But we have a genius plan to drive them out of business so it’s all good. Still planning on moving ASAP though. Once a spot that makes me think of shootings, always a spot that makes me think of shootings.
