Saw this earlier...and this is the problem with society, the us vs. them mentality

5 years at a 75 person company, 10 years at an 800+ person company, and 4 years at a 50-60 person company. Of those fellow employees, over the years I worked directly with about 25-30 who were black and who had grown up in NYC. It has always been a topic of conversation, for obvious reasons. Pretty much every one of them who grew up in NYC that I worked with had been stopped and frisked. Another dozen had moved here as adults, and about half of them had had an incident. Is it a perfect sample size? No. But those odds are pretty absurd. I dealt with dozens and dozens of white NYC-born co-workers, and every time the topic came up MAYBE 1 out of 10 had had a similar experience, and never as an adult.

At my first job we routinely worked until 10-11pm a night or two per week. Without fail I would have to flag down a cab for my black coworker because none would stop for him, despite that being against the law.

I'm fairly conservative (very conservative by NYC standards), am anti-affirmitive action, etc, but anyone who doesn't believe racial profiling and racism are not rampant in society are completely kidding themselves. In the almost 20 years I've been here the differences in treatment by the police has been very real. When white concert-goers in Central Park were sipping wine or smoking pot, a blind eye was turned. If someone with darker skin was doing that in a park in the outer boroughs, he was getting a summons at a minimum. As much as I dislike the current administration, at least they realized the futility of busting every person with a joint. And I say that as someone who has never partaken of anything but alcohol.

Keep in mind, NYC is usually viewed as one of the most liberal cities in the country, and has a large minority population. I have spent plenty of time in the South over the years, and the deference that black people show to the police there makes you wonder what century we are in. They're not doing it out of respect, they're doing it because they have to.
