Saw this one on Twitter the other day

You're taking a society issue and pigeon holing it into an single situation. In your example I would agree that "Bob the builder" should be able to lease out the house he built with his bare hands. (some staunch commies might disagree) Do you really think that's how most housing transactions happen today? Your example is an extreme end of the spectrum. Now, let's go to the other end of the spectrum.

Let's say Amazon wants to buy ALL the land and houses in the USA. We can (hopefully) see this situation is not ideal either, as Amazon would then have a monopoly on a basic survival need. They continue to raise prices because they are bound by law to maximize profit for shareholders. If you want to have shelter to survive the blizzard you will pay it. Let's take it one step farther - let's say the Chinese government wants to buy ALL the land in the USA. They can just print more and more Chinese Yen until they have enough money to buy it all. This would of course de-value the currency of their citizens but they don't give a fuck because now they own all the land in the USA. Hell maybe Amazon and takes a loan from China and calls it ChinAzon Housing. Maybe they install things like facial recognition, or maybe Jeff Bezos requires you to take a dildo up the anus as the way to open your front door, just to remind you who's daddy.

Now that we've hit extreme ends of the spectrum let's look at an example from how MOST real estate transaction today happen.

I have an acquaintance, we will call him 'Hard Working Harry' who makes his money in real estate. He inherited a commercial building with about 40 units that he leases out to doctors/dentists. Now if your like most average Americans you will make somewhere around $40K this year working full time. Hard Working Harry picks up a check for $40,000 every MONTH (40 units X $1k). I'm not sure what value Hard Working Harry brings to the table here.

Next you will ask for the solution to fix housing across the entire USA. I would say that just because I don't have all the solutions doesn't mean there isn't a a problem. I would start with raising the Estate tax and social housing improvements. We give BILLIONS to foreign governments every year, and spend BILLIONS on defense industries. I would use more of that money for social housing.

If you wish to know more about how mega-corporations are influencing the housing market I would encourage you to read this article - How Wall Street Bought up America's Homes.
