Senior Tory triggers alarm over failure to commit to key European human rights convention

It’s mostly about the ability to deport foreign criminals.

Tories have hated the ECHR for years and years and years, this is nothing new. I really hate when these kind of stories get reported as “so and so votes against laws to protect [nice sounding thing]”, as it is ALWAYS due to a more nuanced objection to specifics in the law or the process.

There was a story about some Lord who voted against “laws to protect girls against FGM”, when it was nothing of the sort, he objected because the bill hadn’t been given the time for debate that it was legally required to. There was one where a judge overturned a ruling that a father should be allowed to see his kids after a divorce, but it was because the police officer witness didn’t disclose that she was the guys girlfriend. Guess how both of those things were reported. If all you look at is what one person tells you a legal case or a law is about, you end up with shit like the Patriot Act in the US.

If you’ve read this far without downvoting, I will be absolute clear that I’m in favour of the ECHR, and I despise the Conservative party. I encourage anyone to read up on what the Tories don’t like about it, so you can see for yourself why they’re wrong in this case, rather than just getting the simplified childish version of “they want to remove human rights”.
