Sentimental EDC

I keep a flag grommet on my key set that I got back when I was in Girl Scouts.

Wall of text incoming: I volunteered at a GS day camp for years and towards the end of each session we'd have a flag retirement ceremony. Companies would donate their old, weather-worn American flags to us to retire respectfully. There are a couple of ways you're supposed retire a flag, but the simplest is to ceremonily burn it (other ways include burying it 6ft underground). The flag was divided into sections and each section would have a little fact attached to it that was read as the piece was burned over a fire. It was simple stuff like the history behind the colors and the 13 stripes - nothing overly patriotic or preachy. We used the ceremony to wrap up field day activities and calm the girls down before they went to bed - they got to stay overnight one night during the week and getting everyone together for a brief, quiet ceremony really helped calm them down and ease their home sickness and anxiety before we sent them back to their units to roast marshmallows before bed. After the ceremony we'd dig the grommets out of the ashes and usually give the to the oldest staff member who had not recieved one yet. Occasionally we'd have girls who lost a parent serving overseas, and in that case we'd present the grommets to the surviving parent or the scout herself. I had a lot of fun working at camp and I like having a little reminder with me.
