[Serious] People who have “beat” or overcome depression/suicidal thoughts, what changed? What is your driving force that keeps you going?

So for me -- and this doesn't exactly answer the question -- it has become a willingness to try to help others talk about their mental health challenges. It's taken me a very long time to do so (apart from working with medical professionals). I'm referring to being able to talk openly and honestly with your friends and family about it.

I attempted suicide. Obviously, I did not "succeed" as I am still here. But I have a very real understanding of being in a place where "going away" seems like the best option.

If you've never faced acute mental health issues, it is my hope that seeing someone like Anthony Bourdain end his own life gives you some perspective about how real they are.

I told my sister today, if you could choose someone else's life to lead, it's not out of the realm of possibility you would choose Anthony Bourdain. He had it all, right? He travelled the world meeting a diversity of people and learning about cultures most of us only dream of.

If his taking his own life isn't indicative of how serious depression and mental illness can be (for anyone), I'm not sure what is.
