[Serious] Those who went from right wing to left wing (or vice versa), what changed your political stance?

I used to be more left of center. As time went on and I became more successful as an adult I got really sick of other people making up excuses as to why I'm successful. I recognize that there are things we can do in specific circumstances to help create equal opportunity, but that not how many of the people I actually know think. People take the whole white privileged thing and turn it into something rude and hurtful.

I didn't grow up rich. There were times in high school where my family went hungry because of the market crash. It's hard to continue buying into the left wing narrative about "no one climbing out of the class they were born into" when I've actually done it.

My brother is a factory worker. He's just as poor now as we were when I grew up. That mother fucker is lazy. He didn't study as hard as I did. He didn't try as hard as I did. I work upwards of 60 hours per week. Why the fuck should I feel bad about being successful? Why should I subsidize him?

I'm not saying everyone who is poor is lazy. I recognize that I was lucky in some aspects, but there was a lot more hard work and determination than anything else. Also, a lot of the people I personally know that didn't make it out, didn't try or didn't try nearly as hard as I did.

I'm still very liberal on social issues, but my view of the economy has shifted.
