Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings International Release Discussion Thread

watched it last night, loved it.

to share my thoughts with those dont see the cultural significance of this film.

so don't look at this as if its an asian action film made by asian for asians, nor should it be looked at as a hollywood action films that try to culturally appropriate martial arts catering to a western audience.

the significance of this film its about asian dispora getting represented as asian dispora portraiting an asian dispora experience away from their ancestoral root but also accepting that root as part of their overall identities.

as an immigrant from asia that grew up in north america. i could relate more to simu liu, than say donnie yen or jackie chan or other asian actor rooted in asia.

he/his role represents those of us that are 'misfits of both world' (too westernized for our ancestral home, too asian to fully get accepted in a western society).

watch this film thru the lens of an immigrant / 1st 2nd gen immigrant descendants, see the actors as actors that happen to have the skin color they have and the cultural root they have (however deep or shallow that might be).

i know this some cliche, but its refreshing to see 'us' getting represented at 'home'.
