Should I learn French or German?

I know that German is spoken in Germany, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. I know that French is spoken in a lot of these countries as well.

To clarify the linguistic situation a little:

-Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein speak German, of course. French isn't commonly understood there. On the other hand not too many people in France or the French speaking parts of Belgium understand German.

-A majority of Switzerland's population speaks German (in somewhat different dialects) but the western regions speak French and part of the south speaks Italian.

-Luxembourg is multilingual: the native language is Luxembourgish (a Germanic language) but French and German are also official languages, and there are also a lot of people that speak Portuguese because of immigration. Knowing either French or German is fine and English is fairly well understood, especially in the city.

-In Belgium, only a very small border region speaks German. Otherwise, people in the north speak Dutch and people in the south (and most of the capital, Brussels) speak French.
