Should I quit high school band?

It depends if you are serious about your clarinet. As a musician (cellist) I can understand the feeling about being humiliated due to not being placed in the same group as your peers. It is actually a very strong feeling in all young musicians since the nature of music education is so public about who's a good player and who isn't. So, if you are serious about your clarinet, you need to overcome this feeling. There are two things to keep in mind.

  • There will always be someone better than you. It does not help your mind state to compare yourself to others because unless you are the next Yo Yo Ma you are always going to be worse than someone else. All you can do is try to improve yourself without getting hung up on failure.

  • People do judge you but you need to get over it if you want to be a good musician. Some people might say don't worry about it because nobody's judging you, but of course they do. Especially in high school. But being a musician, and especially higher music education, involves constantly being judged and evaluated. To be a good musician you have to be able to play confidently even while knowing people are judging you. So take this as like emotional training.
