Simple Questions/What Should I Do? [Weekly Thread]

Hello!

This is the first DIY project for me.I don't have any experience with wood, so I'm expecting to make some mistakes and learn a lot. Hopefully with some advice from everyone, i'll make less mistakes and still learn a lot. =)

I wanted to make a corner desk with no legs in the corners. I did some research on the internet and got some inspiration from: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2015/07/ikea-linnmon-mega-corner-desk.html

and

http://www.ikeahackers.net/2014/12/alex-hammarp-home-office.html

I purchased:

2 Hammarp table tops (74''x 25 5/8'') 2 alex's for the ends 3 Olov Ikea adjustable legs A bag of 3/8'' fluted dose pins A box of Fasteners 10x 2 9 Corner braces 4''

I also purchased wood to construct a frame that was described in the first link. The lumber store I went to did not have the dimension of wood I requested (the 5/4 pine board) and instead they offered 6/4 (or 1.5'' x 5.5 ") or something else thinner. I figured, since they didn't have the exact thickness I wanted I should to go thicker.. because that would be stronger? (As I found out how heavy the wood was transporting it, I was thinking maybe thinner would be better). They cut the wood to dimensions... so all I need to do is make the dowel holes in them to construct the joints for the rame.

I still need to purchase a dowel kit. Initially I was going to purchase the Rockler 3/8'' Dowel Drilling jig kit: http://www.rockler.com/rockler-3-8-dowel-drilling-jig-kit . But Since the wood I purchased is 1.5'' thick wood, I second guessed myself. Would this jig kit accommodate something this thick (1.5'')? Can someone advise if the 3/8'' Dowel would be okay with this, and if not, what size should I use? And if you can recommend a dowel kit if this one would not work? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!
