Having studied the history of Shamanism, I have to criticize your analogy as being incorrect, and that there are better examples to choose from, I dare say. Sorry, it just stings pretty strongly to see unwittingly naive analogies used. Not your fault, actually.

Anyway, this particular caricature is based on Europena propaganda attacking and breaking down native American culture, and making it seem like they're stupid, savage, primitive, less civilized and all that crap. It was about cultural destruction, and making it easier for the invading Europeans to better conquer them. And the myths survived...

That reality is that Shamanism has been successful, for the respective cultures the practices were used in, for many millennia, longer than the whole of Western society's history. Shamanism is extremely varied, and exists in many, many different forms all over the world. The Pre-European Australian Aborigine cultures were a form of Shamanism, for example. Norse Viking culture was heavily Shamanic, even. There are modern practicing Korean Shamans, even. Not all Shamanic cultures used drums, for example. Some used plant-based psychoactives, not all of them hallucinogenic. Some used neither.

Shamanism was about helping the tribe survive, despite the harsh world outside. And it has helped many tribes for many millennia. Sadly, it hasn't been able to stop the greedy Corporations from causing wave after wave of destruction all over world. Some forces are just too much for a bunch of small tribes to deal with. They've done their best, though...
