I know some people like to write off his books as simple or shallow, but Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive is the best case I've ever seen of a story tackling mental health.

IMO the book gets it right by depicting depression as something that hurts you day by day. And that no matter how well things are going, a person with depression can feel bad for the sake of it, because your brain just works like that. But that's the only success I give Brandon Sanderson on the subject of depression.

I don't like him personally (I've read SA, Mistborn first trilogy, Warbreaker and Elantris) and I get why people likes him (worldbuilding and that kind of stuff). But if you think Sanderson is the best writer you have seen tackling mental health concepts and you enjoyed that fact, I encourage you to read more books in general from other authors out there, who have so much better writing than BS, are better in dialogues and characterization and have a more in depth knowledge on the subject. They may have not the shonen component to it, but there is a lot of good books out there.
