[Spoilers] Anyone else miss the sense of urgency/dread that we had in DBZ?

No. I still feel it most of the time. I also don't understand why people aren't freaked out by Zen-oh, a creature who wipes out solar systems and civilizations for fun. There's no balance to him, there is no Zen-kai hanging about, it's just one god of destruction at the top childishly poking planets until they explode.

That concept terrifies me, it's on par with Lovecraftian writing (it is actually exactly what Lovecraft wrote about) and the execution is so fucking awful. Goku has always been a walking plot device, someone who can explain allies and enemies without relying on exposition. But there's no fear when Goku's in charge, no terror when he's getting good fights. The camera needs to move off Goku for a while in order to build tension and that hasn't happened enough yet.

Conceptually, Zen-oh is horrifying, right out of the freakiest writings up there with the Hanged King. But on-screen Zen is a laughing child. The story could get fantastic if they show how things actually are, but that would involve putting the camera on Vegeta or Piccolo. I don't think that would happen.

tldr: Yes, but the series has a scary character (Zen) and they're not using him right.
