Successful ADHDers - would you like sharing with us what helped you most overcoming the ADHD struggles?

TL;DR

  1. Get some regularity in your life. Minimum wage jobs are great for this.
  2. Find a long term project to work on. This could be a startup company, or your health, or a new hobby
  3. Use your medication. Seriously.
  4. Go out sometimes! Relieve your stress.
  5. Always get a full nights sleep when you can. It's worth it.
  6. Take time to reflect on how far you've come.

I have ADHD and the other usual disorders that come along for the ride (depression, anxiety etc). I left school two and a half years ago after I realized I couldn't keep up with the pace of an EE degree and would fail out if I didn't.

I took 3 semesters off and worked a minimum wage job as a ski instructor while living with relatives, and at a hospital in IT after the season ended. I used to really dislike the idea of working minimum wage in a role that wasn't really appreciated, but one thing I never thought about was how good that regularity can be for your mental health. No exams, no project demos, just be punctual, get your stuff done, and use your downtime to learn. It's just nice to have something there to let you know "Hey you! You're doing alright, man. Keep it up."

During my time working at that hospital, I started working on a startup project with my dad (a doctor) that has some pretty huge potential to save lives. When I started, I was a terrible programmer, didn't know a thing about business, project management etc. Since then, I've learned a ton. This is the kind of project that takes years to come to fruition, but for me the continual gradual change makes it exciting. I look back at the code I wrote a year ago and it's amazing to see the personal progress I've made.

About a year and a half after leaving school, the startup was approaching a stage in which progress was out of my hands, so I decided to go back to school. I left as a sophomore, and when I came back most of my friends were graduating. It was humbling to say the least. But now I was committed to seeing it through. So I started taking my medication every day to keep up the regularity, and getting a full nights sleep every night to keep me recharged. I

Balancing this with a full course load meant I didn't get out much, but that made those times that I did all the more memorable. I went to class every day, and turned in my homework, even if it was half done. All the while, I'd take some time at the end of each day to reflect on the good things that happened, and think about ways to improve where I saw regression or stagnation ("hmm, maybe I should try not to play OSRS for two hours the night before a long homework is due").

This eventually paid off, and I finished that first semester back with a 3.46. The one I just finished, I got a 4.0 in all my junior level engineering classes, which was unexpected but also amazing. In the startup, we just hired a new CEO and are seeking our first big round of funding. I'm currently writing an article about some of our preliminary results, which I hope the community I publish to will be excited about.

Anyways, so that's me. College dropout -> entrepreneur that got awesome grades. Not sure if this will be meaningful to anyone, but I hope it can resonate with at least one person.
