sums up high school

Good for them. Only an idiot would go to a university after high school. That's a great way to pay ten times more for half the education. My ex went to a university for a math degree. I sat in on her classes. They were not better. They were expensive.

My community college beginning electronics professor designed equipment for HP for 40 years. The intermediate and advanced professor worked at Bell Labs his whole life. Intro to engineering was taught by someone who designed an oscillator used in ICBMs and by someone who designed processors at Intel. The math department was UC Berkeley PhDs who got tired of writing papers and decided to settle down into teaching. Same deal with physics and chemistry. Want to hang out with the prof after class? That's totally cool because they're not busy doing research, they actually care about you, and they have tons of industry connections and experience.

Sorry--it upsets me when people talk about community college like it's some loser option. Community college is a very good idea. Given the choice of an Ivy League and my community college, I'd go with community college. It simply does not make sense to go to a prestigious university for undergrad when you're fresh out of high school. If you can get into an Ivy League out of high school, and you belong there, you can still get in after a few years of community college. Also, the prestigious schools only matter for grad school and you have no idea what you want at 18. I've watched so many brilliant people stumble at my ex's university. That is a seriously expensive mistake and it ruins families. I can't even imagine the emotional and financial ruin that would cause at a prestigious university. Even brilliant people mess up.
