Talk of the Week - Sunday September 11th - Saturday September 17th

While doing some research for a child-free YouTube project I'm currently working on I came across this information concerning free birth control for low-income residents here in Alabama (Roll Tide!!). It's called Plan First. I helped enroll my niece in it a couple years ago. It now covers vasectomies; it covers tubals, too, but I'm fairly certain it has always covered tubals.

Here's a brief summary of some info from their website:

Plan First Requirements

You must:

● live in Alabama ● be a U.S. citizen or be in this country legally ● be a woman between the ages of 19 and 55 ● have not had surgery to prevent pregnancy ● meet income requirements

Plan First provides for women ages 19 to 55:

● a yearly family planning exam ● care support from a social worker or nurse ● some types of birth control such as, birth control pills and Depo-Provera shots ● tubal ligation (tube tying) for women 21 years or older ● lab work, such as testing for pregnancy and STDs ● help in planning when to have a baby

As of August 1, 2015, Plan First began coverage of vasectomies (permanent birth control for men) for men ages 21 or older.

What's Not Covered Primary care/medical services are not covered by Plan First. Plan First covers family planning services only. You can receive primary care/medical service, such as treatment for blood pressure and other medical conditions at any community health center. For more information about Alabama's community health centers, call the Plan First Hotline toll-free at 1-888-737-2083.
