Is talking loudly during movie in cinema normal in Toronto?

F that noise, I'd get a refund.

I feel like an old guy, but growing up it was pretty common knowledge not to talk in a movie theatre, but I grew up in a relatively small town where most people had basic education when it came to courtesy for others.

It astounds me how ignorant and dismissive some people are of their surroundings. Like you said, they were doing it in a way that they probably felt cool or something. I see the same thing with people blasting their music in public places and smiling and nodding their head like people just rolled out the red carpet for them. I stopped letting shit like that bother me though, and approach it like an objective case study on the moral degeneracy of our times.
